Mai demult,astronomii foloseau termenul nova(latina nova-nou) pentru a descrie corpurile ceresti care apareau brusc pe cerul noptii.Astazi astronomii pot sa deosebeasca novele de supernove cu o anumita tehnologie numita spectroscopie.

O nova este produsa in interactiunea a doua stele care sunt foarte apropiate una de cealalta.Forta gravitationala a unei stele o atrage pe cealalta in propria ei atmosfera.Cand atmosfera devine destul de densa,explodeaza,putand fi vizibila cu ochiul liber.Apoi stele revin la forma lor initiala.

Exista nove rapide,unde fenomenul de explozie si stralucirea dureaza cateva ore,dar exista si nove lente,unde fenomenul de explozie si stralucirea dureaza cateva luni.
