Este a doua planeta extrasolara(dupa CoRot-7b) descoperita sa aiba o masa stabilita si o raza mai mica decat planetele gigante gazoase din Sistemul Solar.

Planeta pitica Haumea a fost descoperita si observata in anul 2004 de catre o echipa de astronomi condusa de Mike Brown de la Observatorul Astronomic Palomar din Statele Unite ale Americii si in 2005 de o echipa condusa de J.L. Ortiz de la Observatorul Astronomic Sierra Nevada din Spania.

La 17 septembrie 2008, Uniunea Astronomica Internationala a incadrat-o in categoria planetelor pitice, fiind denumita dupa zeita hawaiiana a fertilitatii si a Pamantului, Haumea.

Au fost descoperiti doi sateliti naturali orbitand in jurul planetei pitice Haumea, si anume Hi’iaka si Namaka.

Elongatia extrema a acestei planete o face deosebita in randul OTN-urilor(Obiecte Trans-Neptuniene). Desi forma nu a fost observata direct, calculele dinspre curba de lumina a acesteia ne sugereaza ca este un elipsoid, axa mare a acesteia fiind de doua ori mai mare decat cea mica.

Cu toate, gravitatea ei este suficienta pentru a fi releaxata in echilibru hidrostatic., astfel intalnindu-se definitia de planeta pitica.
